Cognate Share
Definition
The Cognate Share is the share of a parent universe's own words that its child still writes, the measure linguists use to date the split of two languages (Swadesh, 1952). It is read on own words only, never on the core vocabulary every universe writes, and needs at least five to compare. Binary Pulse Theory predicts it falls with each generation, at a rate that tracks the drift of the Lineage Note.
Formally, c = n_s / n_p, where c [∅] is the cognate share, n_s [∅] how many of the parent's own words the child writes and n_p [∅] how many were compared: [∅] = [∅].
It connects to Language of a Universe, Lineage Note and Inherited Compiler.
Mathematical Expression
c = n_s / n_p
