Giant Phase

Definition

The Giant Phase is the last tenth of a star's life: after its core hydrogen runs out a Sun-like star swells into a red giant and ends by blowing off a planetary nebula round a white dwarf, while a star of more than about eight Suns swells into a blue and then red supergiant before its core collapses. Formally, t⋆ᵍ = 0.1 · t⋆, where t⋆ᵍ [𝕋] is the time spent as a giant and t⋆ [𝕋] the main-sequence lifetime: [𝕋] = [𝕋]. It connects to Main-Sequence Lifetime, Pulsar Spin and Stellar Null Well.
