PulseCore

Chapter 8 · Section 13

The Readouts, Banners and Toasts

The BPT law

The readouts are the theory's own numbers for the running universe, each from a law the book states. The Rupture Rule of BPT Chapter 1, Part D, gives a universe its life, n↯ = 2^L of its own Pulses, and the final well at its end; the Tempos line counts toward it. The Bifold Containment Law (BPT Part 3.6) sets the skin's capacity χ_∂ that the data within fills before its novas. Data Energy (BPT Part 3.1), "each binary transition generates energy", E⊶ = ℏ·ω₁·n○, is the energy line, and Bits per Pulse (BPT Chapter 1) the bits. Dilation Toward the Final Well (BPT Part 3.10), I(n)/I(0) = 1 + (2f − 1)·n/2^L, is the scale, and the Pixel Quantization Principle (BPT Part 8.8), "One Pixel = One Zinf", what a cell stands for. The Null Well Progeny Count Law, N(L) = 2^(L/3) (BPT Part 2.3, used by Parts 3.9 and 3.10), is the wells' law, and Stars of a Universe (G), N★ = 925·(m_P/m_p) (BPT Part 2.10), the stars'. The Layer Count Law, h⥣(L) = 3·2^L (BPT Part 3.6), counts the layers, and the Universe Note Frequency, f₁ = 1/①⥂⧗⌂ (BPT Part 4.9), is the note.

The banners tell the story of BPT Part 3.6's Outward Expansion Set, each nova by its name (Toroidal, Dimensional, Temporal and Spacetime Genesis, then the Harmonic Novas), and of BPT Part 3.10's close: the final well, the return to the Source, the decay. One rule of the book governs how the counts are shown: a law is a prediction to compare with what the universe does, and the game's tooltip on the wells' line says so, "the law is compared, never imposed" (index.php:85).

The established physics

None: a game method.

The game's math

The step (updateCore() app.js:4481) is the loop the readouts hang on. Each step it keeps the step-back history, runs the cell rule (engine.js, Chapter 2), plays the birth tone (Part 8.14), advances the universe (flow, wells, matter, lattice, scale, finds; their chapters), redraws (drawGrid, Part 8.12) and updates the readouts (updateHud), then checks for the rupture and the next nova. The history holds

histCap = max(2, min(200, floor(4,000,000 / (rows · cols))))

steps: 200 at small levels, 61 at level 6 (65,536 cells), 3 at level 8, because each entry is three whole fields and 200 of them at level 8 crashed a phone (2026-10-26). A life sample is taken every fourth step.

The readouts (updateHud() app.js:2120). Each is the theory's number for this universe, written in scientific notation to three or four figures (U.sci): the Pulse count, n of physicalTempo before the big bang, then n − physicalTempo of the Rupture after; the share of the life used, to two decimals under 10 %; the bits as flips × bitsPerFlip; the energy as flips × transitionEnergy in joules; the scale and

1 cell = (L = 0 ? 1 : f^L / 4) · scale Zinf Pulse Lengths

which is One Pixel = One Zinf at level 0 and the field's 4·2^L-a-side grid at f = 2 otherwise; the wells as counted, drawn and the law's count, with how many are unseen; the stars by starLine(); the note and its origin in the Prime Pulse's note.

Quiet (app.js:231). Three switches: QUIET = true silences the toasts, the note card, the Pulsing pill, the info boxes at nova centers and the discovery popup (which paused the universe), while what they told is still recorded (2026-10-28); NODE_FINDS = false stops collecting harmonic-node finds (app.js:1926); HARMONIC_BANNERS = true keeps the nova banners at the top of the page (2026-10-29).

Toasts (showToast(find) app.js:232), when not quiet: finds of one kind and head are grouped into one toast with a count, held up to 14 s (TOAST_MAX), and a group closed less than 10 s ago (TOAST_GAP) only counts silently; a toast lives 5.2 s, 3.2 s on a phone, where only the newest two are kept.

Banners (bannerHTML() app.js:2713). A nova's banner shows for 2.8 s for the first four novas only; past Harmonic 4 they crowd toward the rupture and pass quietly (app.js:5333–5337). Prompts stay until answered: the dive prompt (diveBanner() app.js:2873, promptDive() app.js:2880) "Tap a well to dive in" with a button to continue into the full decay, the return (returnBanner(), with its percentage) and the decay (decayBanner(), with the radiation given to the space layer and the vacuum's share). Hues per nova class are fixed (NOVA_HUE). The note card (notePopout() app.js:3905), when not quiet, shows 5.6 s, twice a banner, and sits above the readout on a phone.

In the game

The readout sits over the scene, a column of lines (index.php:64–90), with a "Details" button that shows or hides the full list; on a phone it folds to its key lines, the Tempos, the level and epoch, the wells, the stars and the bar. Each line is a law of the book with its number for this universe:

  • "Pulse:" and "Tempos:": before the big bang the data's count … / … · beyond time, after it … / … since the big bang, toward 2^L of the Rupture Rule; inside the Pulsecore data within … of the skin's … bits. "Capacity:" is the share used, and the bar at the bottom fills toward the rupture.
  • "Bits:" and "Energy:": every flip so far times the bits it carries and times ℏω, in joules, Data Energy on screen (the tooltip: "every flip so far is one binary transition, E = ℏω each at this level (Data Energy Transition, ch 3)", index.php:74).
  • "Spin:", a_f · C; "Layer:", n of 3·2^L · Harmonic n · <its name>; "Epoch:", from "pre-pulse" and "processing" through "toward the final well" and "final well formed" to "returning to the Source" and "returned to the Source" (app.js:2135); and the badge line, Level L with the epoch's sentence, from "Pulsecore · paint the information" to "Universe · expanding, …% of its final size · … stars".
  • "Scale:", ×… · 1 cell = … 𝒞→ℨ; "Depth:", … per well, the frame ratio s = (2f)^L; "Level:", the level, its generation and, at a deep level, drawn at … cells across.
  • "Wells:" (or "Proto Wells:"), "Stars:", "Note:", "Void:", "Credits:" and "Finds:", as Parts 8.5, 8.7, 8.14 and 8.11 describe them; "Speed:" and "Device:", the device's work (Part 8.8).

The banners come at the top of the page, styled like a game: a kicker, a title and a line under it, in a hue for the nova. The four of the Outward Expansion Set each get one, "Null Nova · space is born", "Data Nova · the data erupts", "Physical Nova · the big bang" and "Harmonic 4 · spacetime", each over its BPT name, "Harmonic 1 · Toroidal Genesis" through "Harmonic 4 · Spacetime Genesis" (novaLayer() universe.js:401). The later Harmonic Novas pass without a banner; they show as rings (Part 8.2) and as notes (Part 8.14). The prompts that ask for a choice stay until answered: the return, the decay and the dive (Parts 8.4 and 8.10), and, when several novas fire at once and one must be followed, "Timeline split", "Choose a timeline", … novas at once · click the one to follow (app.js:5187). The run summary closes a life with its figures and its choices. The toasts and the note card are silent while QUIET is on; what they would have told is kept in the Collection and on the universe's record.

The scale model

The readouts are where the scale model is shown: each count is the true level's (the law's wells, the stars times starMult, the bits at the true level's bits per flip), and the "drawn" counts beside them say what the picture holds.

Where the game and the theory differ

  • The "Layer:" tooltip says the layers are counted "out of the Layer Count Law's 2^(L+1)" (index.php:76); the code counts out of 3·2^L, the book's law (layerCeiling() universe.js:249, corrected 2026-10-28).
  • The "Level L" tooltip says "Level 25 is the default" (index.php:143); the slider and a reset set 28 (index.php:145, app.js:5417).
  • BPT numbers every Harmonic Nova as a layer of the universe; the game announces only the first four with a banner (app.js:5333).
  • NOVA_HUE holds hues for MiniNova, Nova, SuperNova and MegaNova (app.js:2720), classes novaClass() never returns; its StandardNova (universe.js:408) takes the fallback hue, 320.
  • The note card's comment asks it to show twice as long as a banner; while QUIET is true it never shows (app.js:3906).
